Why send NDAs from Lever
Recruiters already move every candidate through stages in Lever. When an NDA is a separate manual step, it is easy to forget it before a candidate opens a confidential case study, or to send a new hire the wrong version from an old folder. Linking the agreement to a stage makes it consistent: the same stage always sends the same approved template, filled with the candidate's details.
It also keeps the hiring team out of document editing. The recruiter does not retype names or choose clauses. The template, its locked clauses and the governing law were set once by the people responsible for them.
Which agreement goes out at which stage
The employee NDA and the contractor NDA both include a Protected Activity section, the Defend Trade Secrets Act immunity notice and a local law clause, because state rules on worker covenants differ and federal law protects reporting to agencies such as the SEC and NLRB.

Setting up the Lever NDA rule
- Connect. An admin authorizes NonDisclosures to read candidates, opportunities and postings in Lever.
- Choose the trigger stage. Select the pipeline stage that should send an agreement, for example a take-home stage or the offer stage.
- Choose the template. Assign the candidate one-way NDA, employee NDA or contractor NDA from your team templates. Locked clauses stay locked, and changes to protected clauses go through your approval rule.
- Map fields. Map the candidate name and email to the signer, the posting title to the role or purpose, and your company signatory.
- Test. Move a test candidate into the stage, review the generated agreement, then turn the rule on.
A candidate NDA that does not scare candidates off
A confidentiality agreement early in a hiring process should be short and fair. The one-way template asks the candidate to protect only what you share, for the purpose of the hiring process, with the usual exclusions for information that is public or already known. It contains no non-compete and no assignment of anything the candidate creates outside your materials.
Signing is quick. The candidate opens a personal link sent by email, valid for 30 days, reads the full agreement and signs with a typed or drawn signature, without creating an account. Everyone receives the signed PDF with a certificate page.
Status, register and write-back
Each agreement appears in the NonDisclosures register with status (sent, viewed, signed, declined, expired), a per-signer timeline and the expiry date calculated from the term. HR can nudge unsigned candidates, search by person or type, and export a CSV. Before sending, the rule checks the register so nobody signs the same NDA twice.
On the Company plan, webhooks and the API can write the signed PDF back to the Lever record when the nda.signed event fires. The HR workflow end to end is described in employee confidentiality agreement.
