DocuSign Pricing for NDAs and Cost per Envelope at NDA Volume

A chief operating officer reviewing a monthly report at his desk

DocuSign pricing for NDAs comes down to envelopes. Every NDA you send is one envelope, and the Standard plan (30 USD per user a month on an annual plan) includes up to 100 envelopes per user per year. Bulk send needs Business Pro at 45 USD per user a month. A team sending 60 NDAs a month needs about 8 Standard seats to stay inside the allowance, roughly 2,900 USD a year, before anyone has drafted an NDA or tracked when one expires. A flat NDA tool covering the same volume costs 888 USD a year.

Sending NDAs every week?

Generate a mutual or one-way NDA in two minutes, send it for e-signature and keep every signed copy in a register with expiry reminders. One flat price per team, not per sender.

Most teams don't choose DocuSign for NDAs. They already have it for customer contracts or offer letters, and NDAs pile on top. The bill only becomes a question when someone in finance notices that seat count keeps climbing, or when an admin gets the email that the account is over its envelope allowance. This article works through what DocuSign actually charges at NDA volume, using the figures on its own pricing page, and where an NDA-specific tool is the cheaper way to cover the same work.

DocuSign eSignature plans and envelope limits

These are the eSignature plans DocuSign lists for US buyers at the time of writing, on an annual commitment billed monthly. Check the pricing page before you buy, because DocuSign revises plans and promotions often.

Two footnotes on that page matter most for NDAs. Envelopes over the allowance are billed pay as you go at a per-envelope rate, and you can pre-purchase extra envelopes. DocuSign doesn't print that rate on the plan page. Third-party buyer guides and one public university IT catalog put it somewhere between about 3.60 and 8 USD per envelope depending on plan and whether you prepay, so ask your account rep for your number.

How much does DocuSign cost per envelope?

On the Standard plan, the included cost per envelope is 3.60 USD if a user sends all 100 envelopes the plan allows in a year (360 USD divided by 100). Senders who use fewer pay more per NDA, and envelopes past the allowance are billed at a separate overage rate that DocuSign quotes inside the account or through sales.

That 3.60 USD is the best case. In practice the people who send NDAs are uneven. One account executive sends 15 a month and blows through the allowance by August, while a hiring manager with a seat sends six a year. The allowance only grows when you add seats, so the busy sender is what forces the next seat purchase, and the quiet one still costs a full seat.

Does DocuSign charge per envelope?

Yes, in effect. DocuSign charges per user seat, and each seat includes an envelope allowance. Every envelope you send counts once against it, whether or not anyone signs. When a team goes past the allowance, the extra envelopes are charged one by one or covered by a pre-purchased pack.

What counts as an envelope in DocuSign?

An envelope is one sending of one or more documents to one or more signers. DocuSign counts it once at the moment it is sent, no matter how many pages, fields or signers it holds. For NDAs this has a few practical effects:

  • A declined or voided NDA still counts. If the counterparty asks for edits and you resend, that is a second envelope.
  • Reminders don't count. Nudging a slow signer through the same envelope is free.
  • PowerForms count. A self-serve NDA link on your website uses an envelope each time someone submits it.
  • Bundling helps a little. Sending a mutual NDA and an attachment in one envelope is still one envelope, but you can't bundle NDAs for different counterparties.

What DocuSign costs at three real NDA volumes

The table below uses list prices on annual plans and assumes you buy enough seats to stay inside the envelope allowance, which is what most admins do to avoid surprise overage. Your quote may be lower with negotiated discounts or an Enhanced contract.

Team and volumeNDAs a yearDocuSign Standard seats neededDocuSign cost a yearNonDisclosures cost a year
Founder and one salesperson, 15 NDAs a month1802 (200 envelopes)720 USDStarter, 288 USD (25 NDAs a month, 2 members)

The gap widens with volume because DocuSign's allowance is tied to people and NDA volume isn't. A recruiting coordinator who sends a candidate NDA before every take-home task can need 300 envelopes a year alone. You can keep fewer seats and pay overage instead, which lowers the middle row to roughly 2,600 to 3,100 USD a year (6 seats plus about 120 overage envelopes) at the third-party overage rates quoted above, but you also lose the predictability that made the annual plan attractive.

What you still don't get for NDAs on DocuSign eSignature

Price is only half of it. An eSignature plan signs the file you upload. For NDAs, three jobs stay outside it:

  • Drafting. Someone still edits a Word template to set the term, survival period, governing state and whether there's a non-solicit. Terms drift between versions, and a sales rep can delete a clause before sending.
  • Knowing what's active. DocuSign stores envelopes. It has no field for when an NDA's term ends, so "Do we have a live NDA with this distributor?" means opening PDFs. Envelope expiration in DocuSign is about how long a signer has to sign, not when the agreement lapses.
  • Expiry reminders. Without a register, teams keep sharing information under NDAs that ended months ago. NonDisclosures reads the end date from the term clause and sends NDA expiry reminders 60, 30 and 7 days before.

DocuSign sells contract management and document generation for that work in its higher-tier and CLM products, priced through sales. If you also need one repository for MSAs, order forms and vendor agreements, that may be the right path. If most of the volume is NDAs, it's a lot of platform for a two-page agreement.

Is DocuSign worth it for NDAs?

DocuSign is worth it for NDAs when one or two people send a few dozen a year and the company already pays for seats for other contracts. Past roughly 10 NDAs a month, or once more than three people send them, per-seat pricing plus missing expiry tracking usually makes an NDA-specific tool cheaper and less work.

Many companies keep both. Offer letters, customer agreements and vendor paperwork stay in DocuSign, and the high-volume NDA flow from sales, recruiting and partnerships moves to a tool priced per team. That also trims DocuSign seats bought only to cover envelope allowance. Our DocuSign alternative for NDAs page compares the two feature by feature.

How to cut your DocuSign bill if you keep it for NDAs

  1. Pull the envelope report. In the DocuSign admin, count envelopes per user over the last 12 months and what share were NDAs. Most teams are surprised by the second number.
  2. Find seats bought for allowance only. A seat whose user sends mostly NDAs is the first candidate to remove.
  3. Stop resending. Agree NDA terms before you send. A mutual NDA template with balanced terms gets fewer redlines than a one-sided draft, so fewer voided envelopes.
  4. Price prepaid envelopes. If you stay, a pre-purchased pack is usually cheaper than pay-as-you-go overage.
  5. Move NDAs out at renewal. DocuSign annual plans renew on a set date. Decide 60 days before it, not after.

Recruiting is often the fastest-growing source of NDA envelopes. Teams that hire developers by skill through work samples tend to send an NDA with every paid take-home, and that volume is exactly what an ATS-triggered NDA flow handles without a seat per recruiter.

Switching NDAs off DocuSign without losing history

You don't need to migrate old envelopes to stop paying for new ones. Download the signed NDAs you still rely on as PDFs, upload them to an NDA repository where the term and expiry are extracted, and send new NDAs from the NDA tool from that day on. Signatures collected in either tool are valid under the federal ESIGN Act and state UETA laws, and each NonDisclosures signature comes with an audit trail and certificate page. See how signing NDAs online works for the counterparty, who signs in the browser without an account.
